Simbiosis × Üstünkarlı - Machine vision & line optimisation
One system from log to sale-ready timber: 20-sensor edge scanning, millimetre-accurate measurement and a cutting algorithm that gets the widest board out of every side board. Alignment, blade positioning and packing, all without a human hand.
Results - in figures
The most boards at order sizes from every side board, with minimum waste
Measuring, patterning, aligning and cutting with no operator: the line flows without interruption
Every cut is traceable: yield is reported by product and by period
From log to packed timber without a human hand
Every log is different: curved, tapered, covered in bark. The saw group splits the log into a full-length cant in the middle and a bark-edged side board on either side; the real intelligence is at the edges. The side board enters the PlankScanner line sideways, and 20 sensors along its length capture the sloping bark edges and extract the flat, usable surface. The algorithm places the widest single board that will fit (if 160 mm fits, it never cuts 2×80) and fills the rest with the other sizes in the order recipe. The moment scanning ends, 4 pusher and 4 counter pistons position the board on the alignment line to the millimetre, the moving blades lock onto the pattern and the board passes through them. The operator sees the live cutting pattern and yield suggestions on the HMI; management tracks every cut (width, length, angle, species, yield) in a searchable archive in the analytics app. Products are packed and strapped by size, and the shipment record is logged automatically. We also designed and built the alignment unit that makes sure every plank is fed into the scanner straight.
01 - Challenge
The starting point: what was slowing the line down, putting it at risk or keeping its data in the dark?
Every log is different, so a fixed cutting recipe produces waste
The bark edges of trapezoidal side boards were judged by eye
Aligning the board to the blades by hand: slow and inconsistent
No historical data on cutting yield and waste
02 - Solution
Our answer: mechanics, controls and software, built by one team.
Transverse infeed line: the board travels sideways while 20 sensors capture its edge profile
An algorithm that places the widest board that fits first and fills the rest from the recipe
Millimetre-accurate lateral alignment with 4 pushers + 4 counter pistons, and blades that lock onto the pattern
Operator HMI on the shop floor, analytics in the office: two apps, one set of data
Mechanics (alignment unit included), PLC and software installed from a single source
03 - Result
The difference measured on the line, and seen by the customer every day.
The most boards at order sizes from every side board, with minimum waste
Measuring, patterning, aligning and cutting with no operator: the line flows without interruption
Every cut is traceable: yield is reported by product and by period
From log to packed timber without a human hand
